Overview
Matthew Shapiro is a partner in the Intellectual Property Practice Group in the firm's New York office.
Areas of Practice
Matthew is a trial lawyer with more than 13 years of experience representing clients in complex patent disputes before federal district courts, the International Trade Commission, and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.
Matthew manages high-stakes patent litigations for leading multinational companies. He develops and implements case strategies, leads discovery, technical and damages teams, and prepares and presents witnesses at trial. His experience spans a broad range of technical fields, including industrial systems, consumer electronics, automotive components, and consumer products.
In addition to his district court and ITC litigation experience, Matthew also has considerable experience with inter partes review proceedings before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, where he has served as counsel in more than thirty proceedings. He also advises clients involved in multi-jurisdictional proceedings pending before US courts and Europe’s Unified Patent Court.
Prior to law school, Matthew worked as a computer and software engineer for Lockheed Martin Maritime Systems and Sensors, where he designed software for sonar navigation and positive train control systems. Matthew is the co-inventor of U.S. Patent No. 7,383,719 for an Automated Passenger Screening System, which resulted from his active contributions to the company’s “think tank.”
Matthew has an undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Connecticut ranking first in his graduating class in the school of engineering. He wrote his honors thesis on a Method for Quantitative Analysis of the Software Defect Life Cycle.
