Lawdragon Names Five Stinson Attorneys to its 500 Leading Energy Lawyers List

Lawdragon’s 2025 "500 Leading Energy Lawyers" list features Stinson LLP attorneys James Bertrand, John McCaffrey, Harvey Reiter, Jonathan Schneider and Guy Smith.

The 2025 guide recognizes attorneys exceling in areas of energy law with practices ranging from energy regulation to corporate transactions, including mergers and acquisitions and finance, to infrastructure development supporting the global power grid.

Bertrand represents railroads, electric cooperatives, municipal utilities, and developers of both traditional and renewable energy projects like solar, wind, battery storage, and transmission lines. He has extensive experience with power supply agreements, regulatory and legislative issues, and the transportation of energy commodities such as crude oil, coal, and biofuels.

McCaffrey specializes in energy regulatory matters before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and federal appellate courts, including organized electric market design, FERC rulemaking proceedings, North American Electric Reliability Corporation electric reliability standards development and compliance, utility ratemaking, interstate natural gas pipeline certifications, and energy-related merger reviews.

Reiter brings deep expertise before the FERC, Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and federal appellate courts. With over 20 oral arguments in federal circuit courts, Harvey advises clients across electric utilities, natural gas, communications, and related sectors, including government agencies, the World Bank, and power marketers.

Schneider counsels clients across the spectrum of electric and natural gas regulation. He advises on a wide array of regulatory issues associated with electric and natural gas utility regulation, market oversight, asset purchase and sale, and project development. He brings over 30 years’ experience to provide the strategic counseling needed to achieve complex energy regulatory objectives.

Smith, a corporate and transactional attorney focused on the energy sector, represents independent power producers, renewable energy companies, utilities, developers, tax equity investors, lenders, equipment suppliers and construction companies in both traditional and renewable energy projects. Smith’s transactional work in the energy sector spans both domestic and cross-border transactions.
