Reiter Comments on Possible Impacts of Proposed EPA Regulation Changes
Stinson LLP Senior Counsel Harvey Reiter was quoted in a recent NBC News article, "Trump’s EPA wants to repeal regulations on carbon emissions from power plants" where he examines the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) proposal to repeal existing carbon emissions standards for coal- and gas-fired power plants.
Reiter addressed how the proposed regulatory changes could affect energy companies and utilities that have already made significant operational and investment decisions. He anticipates that some companies with long-term investments in renewable energy may push back against the regulations and that some states may file lawsuits if the EPA moves forward with its planned repeals.
"The biggest impacts of the proposed rules are uncertainty and instability," Reiter said. "Nobody knows what to do next. It makes investment decisions harder. It makes decisions about hiring, staff and employees harder. It creates a lot of uncertainty in the market."
Reiter focuses his practice on competition in the electric and natural gas industries, representing clients in proceedings before FERC, the FCC and federal courts. He brings a wealth of knowledge to his legal counsel in litigation, appellate, transactional and other legal services, and offers regulatory and trial insights with a strong focus on antitrust and competition issues. Reiter is an adjunct professor of law at George Washington University Law School and editor-in-chief of the Energy Law Journal.
