Stinson Continues Tradition of Supporting Nonprofits Through Annual Legal Clinic

Press Release
06.13.2025

On June 12, Stinson LLP welcomed local Kansas City nonprofits to its 7th annual Pro Bono Nonprofit Legal Clinic, an event designed to provide free legal guidance on issues impacting nonprofit operations. The clinic was led by the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law’s Entrepreneurial Legal Services Clinic, with support from Kansas Legal Services and the Mid-America Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel.

Participating organizations applied in advance and were matched with teams of Stinson attorneys and in-house counsel from local businesses. Matches were made based on each nonprofit’s legal need and the attorneys’ areas of practice, allowing for targeted support in areas such as corporate governance, employment law, real estate, and intellectual property.

"Nonprofits play a critical role in creating strong, vibrant communities by offering essential services and cultural enrichment," said Stinson Pro Bono Counsel Katie Cronin. "By providing these legal services, we hope to ease the burdens they face and help them focus their time and resources where they matter most. The clinic offers a powerful way for attorneys to connect directly with organizations and make a tangible impact."

Nonprofits involved in the Pro Bono Nonprofit Legal Clinic include Center for Supportive Communities, Friends of the Johnson County Library, Healing House, Inc., Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council, Leavenworth Humane Society, Inc., Save, Inc., The HALO Foundation, The Know Joey Foundation, The Single Mom KC, and Valor Partners Foundation.

"We are grateful for the annual Nonprofit Legal Clinic offered by Stinson LLP and UMKC," said Center for Supportive Communities Founder and Executive Director Kelsey Dachman. "Their legal expertise has been instrumental in building our capacity as a nonprofit organization allowing us to focus on what matters most – advancing our mission and driving positive change in the communities we serve. We thank them for providing this invaluable legal clinic to Kansas City nonprofits."

Participating in-house counsel include Pacific Life’s Jennifer McAdam, CRB Group Inc.'s Duke Bailey, Koch's Maddy Tannahill, Sean Tarantino and Kristin Westgard, PNC Bank's Patrick Calland and Rachel Mashburn, and Terracon Consultants, Inc.'s Patrick Courtney and Anish Patel; all are Association of Corporate Counsel member attorneys.

Members of the Pro Bono Nonprofit Legal Clinic planning committee include UMKC Law's Danielle Merrick, Stinson's Katie Cronin and David Gottfried, Kansas Legal Services' Joy Springfield, Koch's Kristin Westgard, and Terracon Consultants, Inc.'s Patrick Courtney.

The firm's pro bono practice is spearheaded by the firm's pro bono committee and implemented by Pro Bono Counsel Katie Cronin, along with Pro Bono Attorney Tim Sanders Szabo and Pro Bono Specialist David Gottfried.

Stinson, Koch and Terracon Consultants, Inc., served as financial sponsors for the clinic. Stinson's summer associates, UMKC summer interns, Kansas Legal Services summer interns, Terracon Consultant’s summer interns, and Koch's summer interns also assisted with the clinic.
