Overview
Colin is an experienced litigator and registered patent attorney. He focuses his practice in intellectual property litigation, trademark prosecution and enforcement, and patent preparation and prosecution.
Colin has extensive experience representing clients in patent, trademark, trade dress, and copyright litigation in federal courts throughout the U.S. and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. One of his strengths is effectively managing the numerous moving parts associated with complex intellectual property litigation.
Colin works with clients to protect their brands through cease and desist letter campaigns and the preparation and submission of takedown notices to on-line retailers and social media platforms.
Colin helps clients to evaluate whether their new brands, products, and services pose any risk of patent and/or trademark infringement.
With a chemical engineering background, Colin is well suited for working with inventors in a variety of technological areas—including in the fields of industrial-scale chemical and oil manufacturing—to prepare and prosecute U.S. and foreign patent applications.

Numerous patent disputes across the U.S., including in the District of Delaware, the Eastern District of Texas, and the Western District of Texas.
First chair defense of natural gas fuel management company in patent dispute involving five patents.
First chair prosecution of patent dispute on behalf of consulting engineering firm.
First chair defense of clients in software and trade secret disputes.
First chair prosecution on behalf of The Kroger Co. in IPR proceeding; defense counsel in related litigation in the Eastern District of Texas. Obtained a ruling from the PTAB that there was a reasonable likelihood that all challenged claims would be shown invalid (Featured on Law360). The parties reached a settlement shortly thereafter and the proceedings were terminated. The Kroger Co., MGPI Processing, Inc., and MGP Ingredients, Inc. v. Healthy Fiber, LLC, IPR No. 2018-00824.
First chair defense of bank in trademark cancellation proceeding before the TTAB.
Obtained a $2.7 million verdict of patent infringement that the court increased by an additional 50 percent due to the jury's finding of willful infringement. Cobalt Boats, LLC v. Sea Ray Boats, Inc., and Brunswick Corp., Eastern District of Virginia, 2017

Representation of a famous restaurant brand in federal court in a trademark, trade dress, and copyright infringement suit brought against another restaurant operator and obtained a settlement.
Representation of multiple clients in patent disputes with non-practicing entities. In one recent case, obtained a favorable settlement for a well-known chemical company.
Defense of a music publisher in a lawsuit against claims of trademark and copyright infringement and obtained a settlement, part of which included the entry of judgment in favor of his client as to its related counterclaims.
Defense of a national online retailer in a lawsuit against claims of copyright and trademark infringement and obtained a settlement.
Management of a major sporting goods company’s trademark enforcement program in order to protect well-known brands.
Colin has prepared and prosecuted patents in technology areas such as chemical separation processes, catalytically enhanced reactions, oil-field chemicals, pharmaceuticals (veterinary medication and cancer-therapy drug precursors), small molecules, implantable drug delivery systems, polymers, cryogenics and cryogenic devices, medical devices and mechanical devices.
Colin reviews case files for the Midwest Innocence Project in an effort to help prove the innocence of the wrongly accused.
