Porter Featured on Columbus Business First’s 2016 “20 People to Know in Law” List
Bill Porter, a partner in the Vorys Columbus office and chair of litigation group, was included on Columbus Business First’s 2016 “20 People to Know in Law” List. According to the paper, individuals on the list “are front and center in their industries.”
An interview with Porter was published and included the following questions:
“Jury trials are becoming a rare phenomenon in the courts. Why?
Trials decided by a jury of our peers set us apart from other societies. It would be a travesty to lose this right. And yet the vanishing jury trial is more and more a reality due mostly to the exorbitant costs, prolonged duration of litigation and the tremendous energy required getting even the simplest dispute to trial. Fortunately, the bench and bar – locally, nationally and internationally – have undertaken many initiatives to modify the jury trial so that they can be more accessible, affordable and expedient. In Ohio, for example, the Ohio State Bar Association and the American College of Trial Lawyers are collaborating with the courts, suggesting rule changes to address these concerns that if adopted could be transformative in how jury trials and pretrial preparation are conducted. Let’s hope the changes are seriously considered and this important pillar of our society is preserved.
What’s the most exciting thing happening in your practice?
As chair of the Vorys litigation group, I not only have the opportunity to work with excellent lawyers and great clients directly, but daily I am involved in matching client needs with Vorys lawyers who have corresponding expertise and skill sets on matters ranging from antitrust to Zika. No day is the same and I am a lucky and energized person because of that.”
