Executive Order Seeks Balance in Student-Athlete Compensation

Yesterday, July 24, 2025, President Trump signed a new executive order aimed at preserving and expanding opportunities for collegiate student-athletes, with a focus on women’s and non-revenue sports. This order identifies some of the challenges from recent changes in athlete compensation and aims to create a balanced and fair system benefiting all student-athletes. It also underscores the vital role of college sports in developing leaders and supporting local economies.

We can expect more on this subject soon, as the order mandates that within 30 days, the Secretary of Education, in consultation with key officials, will develop a plan to advance policies through regulatory, enforcement, and litigation mechanisms, including Federal funding decisions, enforcing Title IX, and prohibiting unconstitutional state actions. Additionally, within 60 days, the Attorney General and the FTC Chairman will review and revise litigation positions, guidelines, and policies, and develop a plan for future actions to protect student-athletes and collegiate athletic opportunities.
