Science fiction has now become science fact. Whereas in the past, doctors and researchers were limited in the types of individualized devices they could create for their patients, 3D printing presents the possibility of creating almost any device, limited only by their imaginations. Take the story of little girl born with a condition that precluded the use of her arms. With the help of 3D printing, Dr. Tariq Rahman was able to create a lightweight robotic exoskeleton that allowed her to use her arms in ways never thought possible. Dr. Rahman will discuss this story and how 3D printing is impacting the medical field and its vast potential for the future.

With the Digital Twin paradigm, we will expand our thinking from disease-care to health-care. And we will focus not only on patient-centric prevention, but on person-centric prevention. 11:55 AM – 12:10 PM – Getting to Why: The Impact of Childhood Trauma on Adult Health

Science has taught us much about the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on future health outcomes. ACEs are a strong risk factor for future morbidity, from obesity to drug abuse. ACEs include childhood abuse and neglect, as well as other household dysfunction such as witnessing domestic violence or growing up with family members who have problems with substance abuse or mental illness. Dr. Rebecca Bryan will present on the growing science of how identifying and understanding these events in a person’s past can help us better identify and treat the problems in their present.
12:15 PM – 12:30 PM – Tele-Medicine and Intensive Care, Present and Future: The Evolving Role of the Electronic Intensive Care Unit (E-ICU) in Hospital Medicine
John McIlwaine, D.O. | Director of Telehealth and eICU, Geisinger Health
Through telemedicine and eICUs, hospital systems have been able to extend the reach of intensive care physicians to critically ill patients in remote locations. Dr. John McIlwaine will present on the integration of eICU technology, and the opportunities and challenges inherent in treating the sickest of the sick patients by leveraging electronic tools and monitoring. As healthcare resources are stretched thin by rising costs and availability of specialists, especially in rural communities, telemedicine will continue to be more commonplace in traditional hospital settings. As an expert in this field, Dr. McIlwaine will present on the development of these technologies and what we can expect into the future.

Robert Pugliese will be speaking about Health Design Thinking and the power of design to improve how we think about health and deliver health care. This will be discussed through a series of examples of improving products, services and spaces in health care with better design.
