What Obama's Precision Medicine Initiative May Mean for Health Information Managers and Professionals
Precision medicine is no longer on the fringe of the medical community. To the contrary, it is quickly becoming one of fastest growing areas in medicine and is touted by many as the future of medical treatment. During his last term in office, President Obama unveiled the process for implementing the large-scale initiative known as the Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI). The nationwide implementation of the PMI will raise several new issues for health information and risk managers, especially with respect to data security.
This program explains what precision medicine is and how the PMI is being implemented. It also identifies data management and security issues involved with the PMI and how health information and risk managers can prepare for the data gathering and sharing that is crucial to the success of precision medicine. As precision medicine expands, health care professionals will be tasked with implementing data sharing infrastructure with proper security measures. This information is important for health care professionals so they understand the impact of the PMI and steps they can take to ensure their facilities and providers can safely participate and provide innovative treatments and therapies for their patients.
