Providing pro bono legal service is every lawyer's ethical obligation. For decades, Hinshaw's lawyers have proudly and successfully taken on pro bono matters in virtually every substantive area of practice, including civil rights, employment discrimination, housing, immigration, asylum, family law, probate, guardianship, and criminal justice.
As a result of this work, Hinshaw lawyers have been honored for our wide-ranging work on behalf of those unable to afford access to justice:
- Jean Crowe Pro Bono Award – American Bar Association's Family Law Section
- John Paul Stevens Award for Outstanding Pro Bono and Public Service – Seventh Circuit Bar Association
- Charles O'Laughlin Memorial Award – Chicago Legal Clinic
- Pro Bono Honor Roll 2010 - 2019 – Public Interest Law Initiative
Recognizing the pressing need to eliminate racism in our country, Hinshaw recently became a member of the Law Firm Antiracism Alliance, a newly-formed consortium of law firms dedicated to creating large-scale, coordinated pro bono projects to address systemic racism.
Hinshaw has also been a driving force behind several other new pro bono initiatives, including:
- Illinois Free Legal Answers for Civil Appeals, the first online platform dedicated to helping self-represented litigants (SRLs) with questions about appellate procedure
- Illinois Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission's SRL forms suite for civil appeals
- Illinois Supreme Court's criminal appeals pro bono project
- 2020 Second Chance Expungement Summit
In order to inspire its youngest lawyers to make pro bono work a cornerstone of their professional development, every first year lawyer receives billable hour credit for any pro bono project they undertake during their first year of practice. These projects vary from office to office, depending on each community's needs and each lawyer's interests, and are supervised by the firm's national Pro Bono Legal Services Committee. Pro bono work not only provides our newest lawyers with some of the most gratifying and meaningful experiences of their careers, it also provides an incomparable opportunity to give back, to learn, and to grow.
