Hinshaw Partner Maura McKelvey Named to Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly's Top Women of Law 2018

Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP today announced that Maura K. McKelvey, a partner in the firm's Boston office, has been selected as one of Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly's Top Women of Law for 2018. McKelvey has served in numerous leadership roles at the firm, serving terms on the firm's Management Committee and Executive Committee. She is a member of the firm's Consumer Financial Services Practice Group, and previously served as the co-chair of the practice.

"I am truly honored to have been recognized among this wonderful group of women lawyers," McKelvey said. "This is an especially meaningful honor because I consider the advancement of women to be a top priority for our profession. Support from my clients and colleagues has been key to my career success, and creating opportunities for other women is one of the ways I hope to give back."

The Top Women of Law recognizes "outstanding achievements made by exceptional women lawyers," according to the Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly. "Each year, Lawyers Weekly honors women attorneys who have made tremendous professional strides and demonstrated great accomplishments in the legal field, including in the areas of pro bono, social justice, advocacy and business. The award highlights women who are pioneers, educators, trailblazers, and role models."

The 2018 Top Women of Law will be recognized at an awards ceremony on Oct. 18.

For more than a decade, McKelvey has represented mortgage servicers, lenders and trustees of securitized mortgage trusts in consumer financial services litigation arising out of the 2008 banking crisis and great recession. She led the defense of the mortgage loan servicing industry in an influential case that received national attention, and successfully argued the matter on appeal, which resulted in a watershed decision from the First Circuit Court of Appeals. McKelvey manages mortgage related litigation in New England and throughout the United States and serves as an advisor and expert on financial services litigation for servicers, banks and investors.

McKelvey is a strong advocate of diversity and has worked to promote women lawyers within Hinshaw as well as within the profession.

One of the first lawyers to join Hinshaw's Boston office, McKelvey has built a practice that has significantly contributed to the growth of the office, which has doubled in size in recent years. As a member of Hinshaw's Management Committee, McKelvey participated in the decision-making that shaped the strategic direction of the firm. She also participates in and advises the firm's Women's Affinity Network and Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

McKelvey is a member of the National Association of Women Lawyers. She is an active member of the Mortgage Bankers Association where she has recently worked to establish more networking opportunities for women. She has also supervised pro bono matters which assist members of Boston's homeless population through Hinshaw's involvement with the Lawyers Clearinghouse Legal Clinic.

Maura earned her J.D. from the Boston College Law School in 1995 and her B.A., with distinction, from the University of Michigan in 1992.
