Ian Wagreich Comments in SHRM on New I-9 Form Changes Affecting All Employers

Ian Wagreich was quoted in SHRM, commenting on a new I-9 form released in August 2023 that all employers must start using on November 1st.

The new form combines Sections 1 and 2 into a single page, revises the List of Acceptable Documents, and includes a new checkbox for remote document review under the E-Verify procedure.

Wagreich explained to SHRM:

"E-Verify employers performing remote verification must conduct a live video interview with the employee, retain copies of all documents presented in the I-9 verification process, and create E-Verify cases for new employees."

The shift to remote work has made the physical examination of employees' identification documents infeasible, leading to these changes in the I-9 form to ensure compliance.
