Mitchel is widely recognized for his work in Minnesota and throughout the country on behalf of Tribal-owned cannabis enterprises on and off Tribal lands. He represented a Tribal Nation in negotiating its highly publicized cannabis compact with the State of Minnesota. The compact is the first in the country to facilitate a Tribal nation’s cannabis operations off Tribal lands, within the territorial boundaries of a state.

As a member of the Indigenous Cannabis Industry Association board of directors, Mitchel assists Tribal nations across the country in exercising their sovereignty and developing cannabis programs and operations on their Tribal lands.

He advises clients on general and social equity cannabis business licenses and represents low-potency hemp edible manufacturers and retailers in various legal matters, including regulatory and compliance issues. He also had a key role in drafting amendments to Minnesota legislation and regulations related to medical cannabis, and is part of a Minnesota city planner work group that is developing zoning ordinances pertaining to the cannabis industry.

In addition to his cannabis practice, Mitchel has more than 30 years of experience representing companies on commercial real estate matters, including loan transactions, acquisitions, dispositions, and leasing retail, office, industrial, and multi-family properties. He also advises clients in transactions related to non-real estate asset classes, executive employment agreements, and commercial contracts.

Mitchel also dedicates significant time to non-profit and professional organizations. He serves as president of The Institute for Holocaust Education and Research and is a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association, the State Bar of Arizona, and the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics. A recognized thought leader, he has taught courses on cannabis compliance and commercial real estate for the Minnesota State Bar Association and has authored numerous articles.
