Hinshaw partner Yvonne Ocrant co-authored a chapter titled “Equine Business Transactions,” which was included in the Edward Elgar publication, Introduction to the Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law. Yvonne’s chapter explores the complex legal issues involved in equine business transactions, including key contract principles and prioritizing equine welfare.
Yvonne discusses various essential contracts used in the equine industry, such as liability releases for equine activities, boarding and training agreements, and sales or lease contracts. She explains how equine businesses must adhere to legal standards set by the Equine Activity Liability Acts, the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), and the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF).
The chapter also examines how competition organizations and state and federal laws influence equine welfare, covering topics like equine competitions, horse racing, wild horse management, veterinary medicine, and animal cruelty statutes. Finally, Yvonne considers the effects of consumer protection laws, veterinary regulations, and the responsibilities of professionals and sponsors within the equine industry.
The encyclopedia is available for purchase on the Edward Elgar Publishing website.
