Law in Everyday Life and the Importance of Pro Bono
This year's ABA National Pro Bono Celebration theme, "Law in Everyday Life," invites those in the legal profession to highlight the ways in which access to legal assistance affects historically excluded and low-income individuals across the country in all aspects of life.
Thursday's programming will feature a presentation from Kathryne Young, Associate Professor of Law at The George Washington University Law School, on the empirical research on everyday legality, including the significance of the civil justice challenges faced by Americans, and the consequences of those challenges for inequality more broadly. Professor Young’s pathbreaking research looks at the numerous factors that intersect with people’s chances of encountering access to justice problems and the numerous approaches that everyday people take to understanding and solving these problems.
Next, Minneapolis Partner and Pro Bono Committee Co-Chair Amy Conway will moderate a discussion with Jim Bass (STL), Audrey Fenske (MPL), Pat Konopka (KCM), and Michael Tucci (WDC), about the importance of balancing pro bono with one's billable practice. The panel will address ABA Model Rule 6.1 (Voluntary Pro Bono Public Service), 1.1 (Competence), and 5.1 (Responsibilities of a Partner or Supervisory Lawyer).
CLE credit is pending in: Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and Texas.
