Ed is a well-rounded lawyer whose instincts excel with bankruptcy matters. He is particularly adept at creating solutions others might overlook.

Overview

Ed counsels Fortune 500 companies, secured and unsecured creditors’ committees, trustees, investment funds and others in complex bankruptcies, workouts and related disputes, particularly in the energy, oil and gas, retail and health care sectors. His keen understanding of complex financial structures helps him craft creative solutions for clients.

Ed has played a leading role in a variety of large and often groundbreaking bankruptcy cases, representing a range of clients in Chapter 11 cases, workouts, civil lawsuits and commercial disputes. In addition to creditor’s rights cases, Ed has handled corporate internal investigations and securities fraud cases. As counsel for the unsecured creditor’s committee, he was instrumental in helping survivors of clergy abuse win a $210 million settlement from the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, the largest diocese bankruptcy case in the nation.

Experience

Ed gravitates toward the complex cases. He recently led settlement negotiations between national broadcasters in the Aereo Inc. bankruptcy and an infringing debtor, which led to a significant payout to unsecured creditors.

He has represented major utility companies, equipment lessors and oil and gas companies, and recently led negotiations for a wholesale petroleum products distributor in multiple debt workouts, collections matters and civil suits.

Ed writes and speaks frequently, and is active in the Turnaround Management Association, among other organizations. He's also a singer, songwriter and performer with Circus of the West, which includes several Stinson attorneys.

Known for his dedication to clients and his love of solving the puzzles his cases present, Ed said that his work for survivors of the clergy abuse matter has been his most rewarding. "My only trepidation in that case arose solely from my fear that I would not be able to do the claimants justice," he said.
