Laura helps clients in the health care industry including hospitals, physician and dental groups, health care professionals, nursing homes, assisted living communities and nonprofits navigate a broad range of regulatory and transactional matters.

Overview

As chair of the Healthcare and Insurance Division, Laura's firm grasp of health law and key health care legislation, along with her ability to identify creative solutions, make her a trusted resource for her clients.

Laura counsels clients on complex transactions, mergers and acquisitions, professional and facility licensing matters, governance, medical staff matters, nonprofit organization and tax exemption matters, patient care legal issues and clinical trial regulations. Laura has a particular understanding of issues unique to rural health care providers, including critical access hospital regulations and exceptions to fraud and abuse laws specific to rural areas, as well as in public hospitals, including the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act and Open Meeting Law.

Prior to joining Stinson, Laura served as a judicial clerk to the Honorable Lorie Skjerven Gildea, Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court.

Experience

Laura has extensive experience assisting clients with the requirements of the Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Statute, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) and other significant regulations.

Experienced in complex health care transactions, Laura represented a Minnesota hospital district in conversion to a nonprofit hospital organization and has represented several critical access hospitals in affiliations with larger health systems.

Laura has counseled physicians in the formation of professional firms and the negotiation of professional services agreements.

Skillfully navigating regulatory requirements and business needs, Laura has advised hospitals and health plans on obtaining and maintaining tax exempt status and structuring supporting organizations to achieve business objectives.

Laura has represented health care professionals in more than 30 complaints before professional licensing boards in Minnesota.

Experienced in hospital-medical staff relationships, Laura has advised hospitals on medical staff bylaws, credentialing, corrective action and fair hearing matters.
