Institute for Professionals in Taxation’s 2021 Reconnect Conference

Vorys Associate Andrew DeBord presented at the Institute for Professionals in Taxation’s 2021 Reconnect Conference on July 29. The presentation titled, “Virtual Hearings: How to Present in Remote Hearings and Still be Persuasive”, focused on the importance of preparation and practice, especially when it comes to explaining income statements, economic performance history, market data, and other valuation considerations on a screen. This includes proficiency with the particular technology adopted by the jurisdiction, which is a must in order to stress key points and supporting evidence. The speakers also explained the importance of connecting on a human level when appearing remotely.

After attending this session, attendees were be able to:

• Identify various methods for preparing exhibits and demonstratives for remote hearings
• Prepare arguments adapted for presentation remotely on a screen
• Evaluate methods for making the participant’s presence felt on screen, including attire, backgrounds, and demeanor
• Assess ways to capture the human element of in-person hearings
