What is the GDPR and Why Should I Care? An Introduction to the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation
Vorys hosted a webinar titled What is the GDPR and Why Should I Care? An Introduction to the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. This webinar was presented by Heather Enlow-Novitsky, Marcel Duhamel and Jonathan Ishee. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a new broad privacy regulation in the European Union, will affect U.S.-based businesses, even those without any physical presence in the European Union. GDPR may apply extraterritorially to any entity that processes, or controls the processing of, non-public information or personal information of residents of EU member states. This means that U.S. businesses that deal with individuals within the EU may be exposed to liability for violating GDPR even if they have no physical presence in the EU. GDPR becomes fully enforceable on May 25, 2018, and it carries the threat of administrative fines as high as €20 million or 4% of annual turnover for certain violations.

- Whether they may be subject to GDPR, and the costs and risks of non-compliance
- What they must do to comply if they are subject to GDPR
- What the operational impacts of GDPR may be
