Mills Quoted in Columbus Dispatch Story Titled "Legislative, Congressional Redistricting Recommendation Could Come Soon"

Fred Mills, a partner in the Vorys Columbus office and the leader of the firm’s government relations group, was quoted in a Columbus Dispatch story about the work of the Ohio Constitutional Modernization Commission.  Mills serves on the Commission and is the chair its Legislative Branch and Executive Branch Subcommittee, which is examining the redistricting process in Ohio.  According to the story, there may be a proposal to reform redistricting soon.

The story states:

“Fred Mills, a lobbyist and former longtime senior legislative staff member who is heading the committee studying both redistricting and a potential lengthening of term limits, said he hopes to have a proposal to the group in August that can allow for serious discussion.

Under Ohio’s current structure, the majority political party gerrymanders legislative districts to its benefit — often creating a host of uncompetitive districts that critics say is unfair to voters and creates a more difficult, partisan Statehouse environment.

There appears to be agreement among members of the Modernization Commission’s committee examining the issue that the state should create a bipartisan panel to draw both legislative and congressional districts. An approved map would require the vote of at least one minority-party member — a setup similar to a proposal that passed the Ohio Senate in 2012.”
