Russell Profiled in Columbus Business First Story Titled “Vorys Attorney Reflects on First Year Teaching Oil and Gas Course at Ohio State's Law School”
Greg Russell, a partner in the Vorys Columbus office and the leader of the firm’s energy group, was profiled in a Columbus Business First story titled “Vorys Attorney Reflects on First Year Teaching Oil and Gas Course at Ohio State's Law School.” Russell agreed in the spring of 2014 to teach Moritz College of Law’s first oil and gas course. According to the story, at that time, the industry was in a better place.
The article states:
“Still, the major downturn in the U.S. shale oil and gas industry that began late last year didn’t scare off potential future-energy lawyers, said Russell, a partner in Vorys Sater Seymour and Pease LLP’s energy group.
In fact, it offered a learning opportunity for the 30 second- and third-year law students.
‘It helped illuminate certain issues that come up into the industry and come up in the legal framework,’ Russell told me. ‘Why certain provisions might be included in leases, why you’d see disputes regarding royalties.’
The downturn has led to layoffs and a steep drop in drilling in eastern Ohio’s Utica shale play and beyond. But the industry is cyclical – it always has high peaks and low valleys. The timing of the class is interesting, but ‘there’s still going to be significant demand for knowledgeable oil and gas attorneys in Ohio,’ Russell said.”
