Ohio Statehouse Update: Ohio General Election Summary 2022

U.S. Senate

In a hotly contested race that generated considerable national attention, Republican J.D. Vance secured victory over Democrat Tim Ryan by a 53% to 47% margin to replace retiring U.S. Senator Rob Portman.

Republicans secured a 10-5 seat majority over Democrats in the first election after the number of U.S. House seats for Ohio was reduced from 16 to 15 seats. In two close incumbent races of note, Republican incumbent Steve Chabot was defeated by Democrat Challenger Greg Landsman in the Cincinnati-area 1st District, while Democrat incumbent Marcy Kaptur held on to secure re-election in the Toledo-area 9th District. In two noteworthy open seat races, former aide to President Trump Republican Max Miller defeated Democrat Matthew Diemer in the 7th District, while Democrat and former Ohio House Minority Leader Emilia Sykes prevailed over Republican Madison Gesiotto Gilbert in the Akron-area 13th District.

In two particularly noteworthy races, incumbent Democrat and House Assistant Minority Leader Thomas West was defeated by Republican challenger Jim Thomas in the 49th House District race in Stark County, and Democrat incumbent and Assistant Minority Whip Richard Brown is currently trailing his Republican challenger Ronald Beach by less than 100 votes in the Franklin County 5th House District race.
