Maria Quintero Quoted in Forbes Article on Google's Concerns Over Michigan's Driverless Car Plan

September 16, 2016

Maria S. Quintero, a San Francisco-based partner in the national Insurance Services group at Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP, was quoted in the article, "Google Sees Barrier In Michigan's Driverless Car Plan; Lawmakers Say They'll Tweak," published by Forbes on September 16, 2016.

The article discusses how Google has lobbied state legislatures to permit the testing of self-driving cars on public roads, but Michigan bills could exclude Google because they appear to only apply to carmakers. Two legislatures are now working on rules that will amend the bill to include tech firms, suppliers and ride-hailing companies, along with carmakers.

Ms. Quintero comments that Google's concerns with the current bill are warranted stating "It appears Michigan one-upped California and is doubling down on their automakers, at least for now," she said. "The legislation effectively excludes non-traditional automakers like Google because the definition of 'motor vehicle manufacturer' is limited to a person (company) 'that has manufactured and distributed motor vehicles."
