McConnell Valdés’ Nonprofit Organizations Practice Team offers these organizations, such as private foundations, public charities, and social welfare organizations and their governing boards, a dedicated group of experienced attorneys providing counsel on the diverse tax, corporate, governance, labor, real estate, government affairs, intellectual property, trusts and estates, insurance, and regulatory legal issues that they encounter. The Firm’s representative clients include arts, cultural and educational institutions, social services agencies, grant-making private foundations, and religious organizations.
We provide assistance to Puerto Rico-based nonprofit organizations seeking federal tax exemption pursuant to U.S. Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(3) and related sections, as well as its equivalent provisions under the Puerto Rico Internal Revenue Code. Mainland U.S.-based nonprofit organizations seek our Firm’s counsel regarding compliance issues under Puerto Rico tax, corporate, and labor laws when establishing local offices, managing volunteers, and providing grants to local organizations. In addition, the Firm counsels businesses and individuals interested in establishing and implementing corporate and private foundations and other charitable programs. We are able to draw from the Firm’s depth in all practice areas to render cost effective and practical advice to our nonprofit clients, thus being able to act as their full service firm.
Our attorneys’ expertise with nonprofit organizations stems from our legal practice as well as from the attorneys’ and the Firm’s long-standing involvement in the nonprofit sector. Many of our attorneys serve on nonprofit organizations’ governing boards. As a result, we have a deep understanding of how these organizations operate and the particular legal issues they face.
