Experienced IP and Pharmaceutical Patent Litigators Join Vorys as Partners
Vorys announced that Stephen P. Benson and Kimberly A. Beis have recently joined the firm as partners in the intellectual property (IP) group. Both come to Vorys with significant experience in patent litigation, more specifically pharmaceutical patent litigation, including litigation brought under the Hatch-Waxman Act. In addition, Benson and Beis have significant experience with antitrust litigation, biologics and biosimilars, and working with various companies who have products regulated by federal agencies, including in the personal care product, medical device and food industries. In the personal care product space, Benson and Beis have diverse experience, including class-action litigation, regulatory compliance, distribution models and contract litigation. The pair will be based in Chicago, Illinois.
“We are excited about the continued growth of our IP group,” said Vorys IP Group Chair Carey Jordan. “Stephen and Kim are known as outstanding lawyers and they have unique and sophisticated IP litigation experience that will strengthen our group and allow us to further help our pharmaceutical, cosmetic and consumer personal care clients protect their valuable IP.”
Benson has nearly 20 years of experience in IP law and more specifically patent litigation related to pharmaceutical patents. He manages matters from strategy design to settlement and verdict. Additionally, he has been assisting clients in the personal care product space for over 15 years, and has a depth of knowledge about the legal issues that arise for these clients in virtually all aspects of their business. Benson has an extensive background in microbiology and physics. This includes participating in a study of bacterial pathogenicity factors of Haemophilus influenza, which was presented at the 39th Annual Meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and a nomination to Sigma Pi Sigma, the Physics & Astronomy Honor Society.
“Vorys is a highly respected, client-focused firm with a strong IP group and talented attorneys,” said Benson. “Joining the firm will allow us to grow our practice, expand client access to Vorys’ respected attorneys and continue to focus on delivering highly professional, ethical and intelligent client service.”
Beis has extensive experience with IP litigation in industries regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). She also has experience advising clients in a variety of industries regarding compliance with FDA and FTC requirements.
“We were looking for a client-focused firm where we could grow our practice and give the best possible support to our clients. Vorys was the perfect fit,” said Beis. “The firm’s IP group, and the firm as a whole, include excellent attorneys with unique experience in many industries and technologies which offer incredible synergies with our own practice, allowing us to even better support our clients.”
Benson received his J.D. from the DePaul University College of Law, his M.S. in neurobiology from Northwestern University and his B.S. in microbiology with a focus on physics from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
